Types of Membership
APIC is now recognized as an increasingly representative association for professional interpreters and offers two ways to welcome new members.
CANDIDATE FOR MEMBERSHIP
Requirements
- Mastery of at least two languages.
- Provide proof of at least 50 days of work as a professional interpreter, with 10 of those days working alongside APIC members.
- Be sponsored by three full or corresponding members who have been with APIC for at least two years. One of these sponsors will be appointed as your advisor until you become a full member, guiding you in all professional matters.
- Commit to working in accordance with APIC’s bylaws, regulations, and code of ethics (you can find this information here).
- Submit the membership application with a brief CV listing your interpreting experience and supporting documentation such as contracts and testimonials from colleagues, clients, or official bodies.
FULL OR CORRESPONDING MEMBER
Requirements
- Mastery of at least three languages, at the level of “A,” “B,” and “C,” or two languages at the level of “A/A” or “A/B.”
- Have worked as a professional interpreter for at least 200 verified days.
- Be supported by four or five APIC members who meet the criteria outlined in Article 33 of the bylaws: “Every application for admission must be supported by at least five sponsors for three languages or four sponsors for two languages. Sponsors must be full and/or corresponding members of APIC for at least two years.”
- Commit to working in accordance with APIC’s bylaws, regulations, and code of ethics (information on which can be found here).
- Submit the application for membership along with a brief CV detailing the events you have worked on and evidence of your work, such as contracts and testimonials from colleagues, clients, or official bodies.
Requirements for Sponsorship
Each membership application must be supported by at least five sponsors for three languages or four sponsors for two languages. Sponsors must be full and/or corresponding members of APIC.
Requirements for Sponsorship
The language combination of the four or more sponsors must collectively cover the entire language combination of the candidate, with the following minimum requirements:
For each of the candidate’s A languages: two sponsors with the same classification in that language;
For each of the candidate’s B languages: one sponsor with an A level in that language, or two sponsors at a B level;
For each of the candidate’s C languages: one sponsor with an A or B level in that language, or two sponsors at a C level.
Rare or sign languages
Mastery of at least two languages;
Minimum of twenty-five documented days as a professional interpreter;
Sponsored by three members who have been full or corresponding members for at least two years. One sponsor must be appointed as the candidate’s advisor until they become a member, assisting and guiding in all professional matters.
If no full members are available to validate proficiency in a rare or sign language, the CACL (Language Admission and Classification Committee) will depend on letters of recommendation from consulates or similar entities.
Commit to operating in accordance with APIC’s Bylaws, Regulations, and Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (information available here).
Submit the application for membership along with a brief CV that lists relevant work experience and provides evidence such as contracts and testimonials from colleagues, clients, or official organizations.
