APIC is recognized nowadays as the Association that best represents professional conference interpreters. As such, APIC provides two ways through which professionals in this field can become members:
How to become a member of APIC
Admission as Candidate for Membership
The candidate must: be fluent in at least two (2) languages; provide proof of at least (fifty) 50 days of booth work as a professional conference interpreter; be sponsored by three (3) full members of APIC (sponsors); agree to be tutored until becoming a full member of the Association.
Admission as Full Member/Corresponding Member
The candidate must: provide proof of at least two hundred (200) days of booth work as a professional conference interpreter; be fluent in two (2) or three (3) languages; and be sponsored by four (4) or five (5) full members (sponsors), as established in the Linguistic Classification and Sponsorship rules.
APPLICATION AS CANDIDATE FOR MEMBERSHIP
To apply for membership, the candidate shall:
- Be fluent in at least two (2) languages.
- Provide proof of having worked at least fifty (50) days as a professional conference interpreter in the booth, of which ten (10) days with members of APIC.
- Sponsorship: be introduced, through the application form, by three (3) full members and//or corresponding members. One of these full/corresponding members shall be appointed as the candidate’s tutor until the candidate is admitted as a full member of the Association (within a period of up to five years). The tutor shall act as the candidate´s advisor and provide guidance on all professional issues.
- Take on the commitment to work according to APIC´s internal rules and Code of Ethics.
- Submit the application form together with a short resumé, listing the events in the report and the number of days of booth work, together with copies of the contracts related to the events mentioned in the resume.
APPLICATION AS FULL OR CORRESPONDING MEMBER
Basic Requirements:
The conference interpreter shall meet the following requirements to be admitted as full/corresponding member of APIC:
- Be fluent in at least three (3) languages, classified as “A”; “B” and “C”, or in two (2) languages classified as “A/A” or “A/B”.
- Provide proof of at least 200 days of booth work as a professional interpreter.
- Sponsorship: be introduced, by means of the application form, by four (4) or five (5) members of APIC who are qualified to act as sponsors and meet the linguistic classification requirements stated in the Internal Rules, as follows:
Sponsorship
Every request for admission shall be supported by at least five (5) sponsors for three (3) languages or four (4) sponsors for two (2) languages. The sponsors must be full and/or corresponding members of APIC.
Sponsors` Language Combinations
The language combination of four (4) or more sponsors together shall cover the candidate´s entire language combination, pursuant to the following minimum requirements:
a) For each “A” language of the candidate: two (2) sponsors with the same classification in this language.
b) For each “B” language of the candidate: one (1) sponsor with “A” classification in this language or two (2) sponsors with “B” classification in this language.
c) For each “C” language of the candidate: one (1) sponsor with “A” or “B” classification in this language, or two (2) sponsors with “C” classification in this language.
Candidates´ obligations
- Take on the commitment to work according to APIC´s by-laws, internal regulations and code of ethics
- Submit the application form together with a brief resume, listing the number of days the candidate worked as a conference interpreter, and include copies of the contracts related to the referred conference interpreting jobs
